Discover the Best Things to Do In and Around Christchurch, New Zealand: Your Ultimate Guide to Unforgettable Adventures

Jess photographed from behind as she walks through Riverside Market in Central Christchurch, New Zealand.

We work in Christchurch hospitality; we get asked so much by fellow travellers and customers what there is to do in and around Christchurch. And as people who have lived and travelled here for 6 months, we have had time to discover the best places and things to do.

So rather than handing out a ratchet piece of paper with some suggestions on, here is a well put together list with our top picks for Christchurch and the surrounding area!

This article is aimed at those who are in Christchurch for a few days, even a week, and want some suggestions on things to do here before moving on with your South Island trip.

In the first half of this article, we cover things to do in Christchurch city itself. Which is useful if you are just staying in the city.

In the second half of this article, we cover amazing places that are 90-minutes outside of Christchurch. Which is great if you want to get away from the city for a day but are still using it as your base. We include suggestions on things to do in all these places too, so you certainly won’t be bored!

Enjoy and good luck on your travels!

We think Christchurch is cool. For a lot of people, it is the first welcome to the South Island- and even New Zealand!

From the decadent food and drink scene to immersive and educational experiences, Christchurch is a great place to start your journey through New Zealand’s South Island.

Visit the Riverside Market

Heaven on Earth for foodies, Riverside Market is a great place to visit for a bite to eat and to kill some time looking at all of the small businesses squished into the market area.

From exceptional curries at Doha to authentic Italian ingredients at Mediterranean food co, Riverside Market has you covered.

Experience Antarctica at the Antarctic Centre

Christchurch is one of the few gateways on the planet to Antarctica. What better place to learn about the elusive south pole than here.

While there you can experience what –42 degrees feels like, meet some awesome huskies, and sit in the 4D cinema for a journey across Drakes Passage, the world’s roughest stretch of ocean!

The 2011 Earthquake experience at Quake City

Our hearts and condolences are with the families of those impacted and the 185 people who lost their lives to the the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake, which struck at 12:51 NZST on the 22nd February at a magnitude of 6.2.

The 2011 Christchurch Earthquake has had such a profound impact on the citizens of New Zealand, especially those in Christchurch.

Even if you are only in town for a day, we think that visiting Quake City is a must due to the magnitude of this event. See what I did with the word magnitude there…

If this is up your street, then check out the Quake City website here.

Fact: At the time the earthquake struck, there just so happened to be a large party of 800 delegates from across New Zealand and Australia all having a urology conference in a convention centre in Christchurch. This meant many more people were saved because there were more doctors around on this particular day than any other. For further information on the doctors in Christchurch and the acts of heroism that they performed, read this article by the USANZ.

Ride up the Port Hills on the Christchurch Gondola

Christchurch is an extremely flat city. Why not traverse to one of the highest points in the area and take in its beauty.

From the densely packed urban area to the Southern Apls and the sea, the views are phenomenal.

You can purchase tickets for the gondola here.

Explore Christchurch’s Drink and Dining Scene

Our go to suggestion on what to do in Christchurch is eating and drinking. There is so much to choose from! As food and drink fanatics, we have thoroughly enjoyed the dining scene here in Christchurch.

From grabbing a quick and delicious lunch or snack in Riverside Market or having dinner on the main strip.

The main feature of this photo is Jess in a stunning pink dress, sat opposite the photographer at a table. There are two glasses of wine visible on the table. We are eating out at a restaurant called Hali, in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Visit the Blooming Botanic Gardens in Hagley Park

In the foreground you can see a beautiful pink rose, and just behind is Ben wearing an oversized brown coat, taken at Christchurch Botanical Gardens, New Zealand.

Found in the welcoming Hagley Park, over half a million people choose to visit the park each year. Naturally, the best time to visit the gardens is during the warmer months, however as home to some of the largest trees in the country, Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens is certainly a must and is one of the best things to do in Christchurch with kids.
